We spent 3 full days (plus 1 prep day) on 13th and Market in downtown Tacoma painting a mural last week. We've done gallery shows, pop-ups, and retail trade shows where we showcased our work and had the chance to engage with others, but the experience of painting a public mural during a busy work week was something to remember.
It reminded us of the importance of public art in cities and how much people don't engage in their surrounds until art is placed there. Numerous comments were made from people that walk this sidewalk daily, saying they've never noticed this "HAPPENINGS" board that was put in, we're guessing, around the 50's. To everyone who commented on the mural, paused silently for several minutes of their day to watch us paint, cocked their heads to get a better look while driving by, or asked us about the project, thank you. We hope to do more!
And for those of you who haven't had a chance to see it in person yet, the mural will be up for a year, until it's open for another proposed mural through the Spaceworks Tacoma program. And a huge thank you to Spaceworks for making public art space available.
